Shanghai, China P.R. 18 May 2018 - The ICCA China Committee Meeting 2018 ended on a high note on 7 May 2018 at Shanghai International Convention Center. More than 60 industry professionals, representing 39 organisations from 15 cities, convened in Shanghai for the gathering, making it the largest turnout to date. Mr. Jason Yeh, ICCA Board Member and Mr. Noor Ahmad Hamid, Regional Director Asia Pacific attended as invited guests.

The annual gathering concluded with a strong call for more collaboration at national and city level and active engagement among members for professional development. Besides recognising the huge potential for the economic growth of the meetings market, the Committee reinforced through this meeting the shared commitment to working together as a team to grow the efforts of ICCA China.

“This is the largest ever ICCA China Committee meeting. With the rapid growth of membership, this calls for a close partnership between members, irrespective of their sectors and location. As such, we should cooperate with the aim of achieving mutual benefits. The meeting has highlighted possible avenues for cooperation between different cities, and everyone present is committed to playing an active role in raising the profile of China as a top meeting hub in the world. At the same time, we also acknowledge the beyond tourism benefits of the meetings industry for China: stimulating trade and export opportunities; helping Chinese academic circles build a global network and connections; and creating a lasting legacy for current and future industry thought leaders in the country,” said Patrick Chen, Secretary General of the ICCA China Committee Working Group.

Noor Ahmad Hamid, Regional Director Asia Pacific, said the industry is rapidly growing and China is ranked top 10 worldwide in ICCA’s recently published statistics report with 376 international association meetings reported in 2017.

It was great to see our members gathering together, sharing best practice and knowledge for the benefit of all. But most importantly, it created opportunities for business synergy among members. I am very pleased to say that the whole ICCA China community is striving to be more active in the international associations sphere via ICCA. The Committee now represents 20 cities in mainland China, and it is important that the whole community continues to foster stronger collaboration and elevate China’s profile on the international scene. For this to become reality, everyone must step up their national engagement, cooperation and collaboration. We must work across borders between ourselves, industries and even academic institutions to bring more events to China,” he said.

The ICCA China Committee was founded on 21 September 2010 with the aim of being “dedicated to developing a world-class international meetings industry for China.” It was first conceived by Shanghai Municipal Tourism Administration, as part of its strategic plan to bid for the ICCA Congress 2013. As a result, the Committee was established based on the Shanghai Congress 2013’s Local Host Committee, by the Board’s mandate.

One of the 5 country committees in the ICCA Asia Pacific Chapter, ICCA China Committee is the largest national grouping in the region comprising 55 member organisations in 20 cities: Beijing, Chengdu, Chongqing, Danzhou, Foshan, Guangzhou, Haikou, Hangzhou, Nanjing, Ningbo, Yangzhou, Qingdao, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Suzhou, Tanzhou, Wuxi, Xiamen, Zhengzhou and Zhuhai.
